Reddit onboarded 3 million users into Web3. None of them knew it was Web3.

In July 2022, Reddit launched "Collectible Avatars." Limited-edition versions of their mascot Snoo, designed by independent artists. Users could buy them with a credit card. Or get one for free as a reward for being active on the platform. No seed phrases. No gas fees. No MetaMask popups. No "connect wallet" button.

Behind the scenes, every user who claimed an avatar got a Polygon-based crypto wallet. Reddit called it a "Vault." The wallet was created automatically, in seconds, inside the app. Users didn't need to understand what a blockchain was. They didn't need to buy ETH first. They didn't need to learn what gas means. They just wanted a cool avatar.

The result: 3 million crypto wallets created in under two months. More than OpenSea had at the time. Over 8.5 million avatars minted in total. Four Reddit collections hit OpenSea's top 10 by trading volume.

The standard Web3 onboarding: Install a wallet extension. Write down 12 words. Buy crypto on an exchange. Transfer it. Approve a token. Pay gas. Approve again. Fail. Pay gas again. 20 to 30 minutes of friction before any value is delivered. Reddit removed all of it.

Renamed everything. NFTs became "Collectible Avatars." Wallet became "Vault." No blockchain terminology anywhere in the user-facing product. Removed the cost barrier — free avatars for active users, paid ones available for $10 to $100, payable by credit card. Reddit covered all gas fees.

Made the wallet invisible — created automatically when a user claimed an avatar. No setup steps. No key management. No friction. Started with value, not technology — users didn't come for blockchain. They came for a better profile picture. The technology was behind the scenes, exactly where it should be. Built on what already existed — Reddit avatars were already a thing. Collectible Avatars were a natural extension, not a new behavior.

This is not a case of dumbing things down. This is a case of designing for people instead of protocols. Reddit proved one thing clearly: Web3 adoption is not blocked by technology. It's blocked by how we present it.

If your onboarding starts with "connect wallet," you've already decided who your users are. And it's not the mainstream.
